Bud is worried and mentions that it would be hard to eat sitting next to Herman because Herman views him with such contempt. After a short conversation with Miss Thomas, Bud tells her that Herman E. Calloway is his biological father. Herman looks at Miss Thomas and asks to be excused as he leaves the table. Herman walks over to the table where his band is sitting and says that someone's got to go sit with Jimmy and Miss Thomas. Bud mentions that everyone in the band jumped up at once to run to his table, but Steady Eddie said, "Take my seat, Mr. C., I wanna talk to that kid, he's got the look of a future sax man about him" (Curtis 166). Steady Eddie ends up taking Herman's seat and sitting next to Bud and Miss Thomas.
