On Halloween night, Scout and Jem walk home from the pageant. They hear someone following them, but they think it is Cecil, who is a boy from school. As they listen, they realize that it is a grown man following them and not a child. Jem orders Scout to run. She tries, but her bulky ham costume from the pageant prevents her from going far. She hears a scuffle, and soon she realizes that a fourth person has joined them.
Scout later finds out what had happened. Bob Ewell had approached them with a knife, intent on harming Scout and Jem. Boo Radley appeared and fought off Bob. In the end, Boo stabbed Bob and he died. Scout finds this out later when Mr. Tate, the sheriff, announces the news:
"Bob Ewell's lyin' on the ground under that tree down yonder with a kitchen knife stuck up under his ribs. He's dead, Mr. Finch." (Chapter 28)
At first, Atticus thinks that Jem killed Bob. Then they realize that Boo had done it. It was decided that they would say Bob Ewell fell on his own knife in order to protect Boo.
