How do I stay calm before and during a speech?

The most important part of preparing to give a speech is to practice. Unless your speech is intentionally improvised on the spot, make sure to practice a few times before hand. Think about what you hope to say in your speech and make a few more cards or a small list of bullet points. Try to practice your speech for a small group of friends or family who can offer constructive criticism. They will also help you feel more comfortable getting into the swing of speaking in front of others!

Second, get a good night's sleep beforehand. I know that stress can make it difficult to sleep, but being well rested is very important. Our brains need rest to perform well, and being sleepy might make you more prone to mistakes or forgetfulness. Try to avoid stimulants like coffee or energy drinks beforehand, which can give you the jitters and increase any already existing anxieties.

Take a leaf out of the singers' book! Stay hydrated so that you are less likely to get dry mouth while speaking. You may wish to keep a bottle of water nearby during your speech just in case. For a few hours before your speech, avoid dairy products, which can create mucous in the throat. Also, for a few days before, try not to do loud singing or shouting which may give you a hoarse voice.

Best of luck to you! Remember, you speak every day, just not to as many people. If someone you know will be in the crowd, maybe look at them and act as though you are speaking to them. You can do it!
